Slips and trips are the most common cause of workplace injury. Around 40% of all workplace major injuries can be attributed to slips and trips .
The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 requires employers to ensure the health and safety of all employees and anyone who may be affected by their work, so far as is reasonably practicable.
The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires employers to assess the risks and to implement suitable and sufficient control measures to either eliminate or reduce the risks.
The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 requires floors to be suitable, in good condition and free from obstructions.
What is apparent from the above is that the employer MUST provide a safe place of work and must not permit hazards that may cause a person to slip, trip or fall to be present without suitable and sufficient control measures being taken.
Undertake a risk assessment to identify hazards that could cause a person to slip, trip or fall and then take appropriate steps to eliminate or reduce them so far as is reasonably practicable.
Maintain high standards of housekeeping at all times. Make sure that cleaning is carried out at regular intervals and that cleaning methods are suitable for the surface.
Have a robust spillage procedure and make sure that staff are aware of it and are following it. Have appropriate signage readily available and clean up spills as soon as possible.
Incorrect chemicals can actually increase the risks by making surfaces more slippery. Always check that the chemical is suitable for the surface you are using it on.
Where possible use surface coverings that provide a high level of slip resistance. In areas where lots of water is used for cleaning ensure wherever possible that non-slip surfaces are installed and maintained.
Make sure that all employees and visitors wear appropriate footwear. This may be different for different areas. You should identify the correct footwear required and if this is classed as PPE it should be provided Free of Charge for employees.
Makes sure that there is suitable edge protection on the top of clamps where there are sheer faces.
Make sure that hoses are tidied away after use and that there are safe places to store them that will not present a trip hazard.
Provide good drainage or gridded walkways in areas where work activities result in slippery surfaces. Maintain the drainage and keep walkways clean.
In cattle handling areas, if concrete is used, try to ensure that this has good traction. Ensure that this is maintained and that any damage/defect is attended to in a timely manner.
Make sure that surfaces are treated and cleared where necessary. Use entrance mats to absorb water/snow/ice from footwear.
Keep the yard tidy, remove obstructions and ensure that there is sufficient lighting especially in areas that are heavily used and where there are steps of slopes.
