Crime in rural areas is on the increase and farms are an attractive prospect to a would be thief. Unfortunately most farms make it easy for the thief by failing to adopt the simplest of security measures. Farms have a lot of high value, easily moveable equipment and their remote locations only add to the risk.
Secure your site, lock gates, use strong padlocks and covers to prevent easy access. maintain fences and hedges. Identify weak spots and think about making it harder for the thiefs. Lock buildings, lock windows and doors, install security lighting and consider security cameras. Think about motion sensors and alarms that are triggered

Secure your equipment, where possible make sure that machinery and equipment is in a secure building when not in use. Always remove keys from vehicles and lock them away.. Consider tagging equipment, fitting trackers, using smart water, remove GPS equipment from tractors when not in use.
Be vigilant, most thefts are planned and the thief will often recce the site either in person by posing as delivery drivers or asking for directions, or using technology, such as drones to check the site, layout and security. Be vigilant to strangers. If you feel that something isn't right speak to your neighbours or the Rural Crime Police Teams.
